About
Made For Rest

The story behind the publication, the places, and the people.

What Made For Rest Is

Made For Rest is an independent publication about home, hospitality, and becoming.

We share stories about the places we create and discover, the work that shapes us, and the transitions that change how we see ourselves.

Sometimes that means opening the doors to one of our stays in the Finger Lakes. Sometimes it’s going behind the scenes to talk honestly about what it takes to build, host, maintain, and rethink those places. Sometimes it’s discovering somewhere worth slowing down for. And sometimes it’s a conversation about work, parenthood, identity, or what happens when the role you’ve known no longer fits.

Different stories. Different parts of life. All connected by the same idea:

Pay attention to what matters while it’s happening.

Where It Began

Made For Rest wasn’t something we set out to build from the beginning.

It started, although we didn’t know it at the time, with a rented RV and a trip that eventually led us to New York’s Finger Lakes.

That trip became a house we never expected to buy. The house became a place we opened to other people. Then came an Airstream. A tiny home. Years spent hosting. A move. Parenthood. New careers. New questions about what home actually means and what we wanted our lives to look like.

Somewhere along the way, we realized the places we’d been creating for other people had been teaching us something too.

About slowing down. About being present. About home being more than an address. And about how easy it is to spend so much time thinking about what’s next that we miss what’s already here.

Made For Rest grew from that realization.

Who We Are

We’re Justin Young and Alma Ayala Young.

We created Made For Rest to share what we’re learning along the way about home, hospitality, work, family, and the moments in between.

We don’t have everything figured out.

We’re still figuring some of it out ourselves.

And that’s part of the point.

Notice What Matters.

We don’t believe a meaningful life is something you finally arrive at.

It’s built slowly, through the homes we make, the places we discover, the work we choose, the people we love, and all of the ordinary moments happening in between.

Made For Rest is our place to notice them.

And hopefully, a place that helps you notice a few more of your own.

Notice What Matters.
